Blessed or Cursed?

"Oh bless your/her heart."

Having lived in Southern Virginia I heard that phrase daily. In hindsight, it was mostly women using the phrase to talk abut other women who were more than likely not present in the conversation. Since moving the Arlington I can count the number of times I've heard the phrase on one hand and I have to tell you that I don't miss hearing it.

The cavalier way we talk about blessing someone else or ourselves being blessed convinces me that we do not fully understand the definition. This is problematic especially in Christian communities where language around blessing is as abundant as bundt cakes at a UMW potluck.

This week on (Her)Men*You*tics, Dr. Johanna Hartilus explained to Jason and I why we need to know what blessing really means and then how that will play out in our faith communities.

Each week on (Her)Men*You*tics we’ll be tackling a theological term that you’ve either heard before or you’ve heard it doing its work in worship whether you realized it or not. We’re going alphabetically, 2 words per letter, and we’re doing it all in 25 minutes or less.
