Asleep in the Pews

I have to admit, I am rarely in front of a congregation on a Sunday morning.  Hanging out with kids on Sunday morning in Sunday School and confirmation is more my speed these days.

Through all of that, I know that many people still use Sunday mornings (particularly during sermons) to catch a nap.  I do understand that some preachers are not as charismatic or entertaining.  But what I do not understand is how people can fall asleep so easily in a church pew.  They are uncomfortable, in my experience, to say the least.

Here is a Catholic congregation in San Francisco who are taking sleeping in the pews to an all new level.  Huffington Post reported about St. Boniface opening their pews to the city's homeless during the day as a safe place to sleep.

"Every weekday the program uses the sanctuary’s rear 76 pews between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. while providing access to the church’s amenities like bathrooms, blankets, clothing vouchers and haircuts..."
